Jawai Weekend Getaway in Winter: Dates & Plan

Every December the same thing happens in office WhatsApp groups. Someone posts the holiday list, someone else counts the Fridays, and ten minutes later everyone is planning a trip to the same crowded hill station. A Jawai weekend getaway is a far better plan.

Winter is when Indian calendars fill up with short breaks. Christmas, New Year, Makar Sankranti and Republic Day all fall within a few weeks of each other, and when one of them lands next to a weekend, a day or two of leave gives you a proper mini holiday. Most of these breaks can be done without any long planning.

If you want a break without highway jams and fully booked cafes, a Jawai weekend getaway is worth a serious look. You get granite hills, a big dam, leopards that walk the rocks at dawn, and a resort where you can actually switch off. This guide covers the winter weekends worth planning around, a realistic two-night plan, what it costs, and how to book before the good dates go.

How to Pick Dates for Your Jawai Weekend Getaway

The exact dates shift by a day or two every year, so instead of a fixed list, open your calendar and look for these windows:

  • Regular weekends in early and mid December
  • The Christmas weekend
  • The New Year weekend
  • Makar Sankranti in mid-January
  • The Republic Day weekend in late January

Check your own office or school holiday list before you apply for leave. Christmas and Republic Day are national holidays, New Year’s Day is off in most offices, and Makar Sankranti depends on where you work.

Here is a simple trick. When Christmas and New Year’s Day fall close to a weekend, a few leave days between them can stretch into a 9 or 10 day break. That is more than Jawai alone needs, but it fits well into a bigger Rajasthan route. We have written about exactly that in our guide on combining a Jawai leopard safari with a Rajasthan road trip.

Which Weekend Should You Pick?

They are not all the same. Here is how each one tends to feel.

Early and mid December

These are the calm ones. The cold has set in, rooms are easy to get, and you can usually pick your safari slot instead of taking whatever is left. If you like taking photographs without a line of vehicles around you, this is your window. Our Jawai wildlife photography guide has tips on light, lenses and where to look.

Christmas weekend

A holiday break that fills up early. Many families travel this weekend, and the resort has a warmer, busier mood in the evenings. It suits groups of friends and families who want a proper holiday without planning too much. If you are travelling with children, read Is Jawai a Good Holiday Destination for Families with Kids? first.

New Year weekend

This is the most popular date of the season. The bonfire night on 31 December is the main attraction. If you want a cottage with a private plunge pool, book this one first, because those rooms go quickest. Our checklist on resorts in Jawai with a private pool will help you know what to ask before paying.

January weekends

January is usually the coldest month in this part of Rajasthan. Mornings are sharp, especially in an open vehicle, but the days are pleasant and the crowd thins out after the New Year rush. The Republic Day weekend is a good pick if you want a long weekend without the festival price tags of late December.

Why a Jawai Weekend Getaway Works So Well

A lot of “weekend trips” in India are really one day of driving, one day of sightseeing and one day of driving back. You come home more tired than you left.

Jawai is easier on you. It sits in Pali district, in the Aravalli hills, around the Jawai Dam. The land is open and rocky, with huge granite boulders piled up as though someone stacked them by hand. The Rabari community has grazed livestock here for generations, and leopards live on the same hills. Sightings feel less like luck and more like paying attention. You scan the rocks, and often the cat is simply lying there.

There is no queue for a viewpoint and no checklist to chase. The plan is a safari at either end of the day and a long, lazy gap in the middle. For a weekend, that is exactly right.

Cold weather helps too. Leopards avoid heat, so winter mornings give you a longer window on the rocks. The full reasoning is in why winter is the best season for a Jawai leopard safari.

How Far Is Jawai From Your City?

Distances matter a lot when you only have two nights. These are rough driving times in normal traffic, so always check Google Maps on the day you leave.

From Approx. Drive Good For
Mount Abu 2.5 to 3 hours Pairing hills and wildlife in one trip
Udaipur 3.5 to 4 hours Regular weekends and long weekends
Jodhpur 3.5 to 4 hours Regular weekends and long weekends
Ahmedabad 6 to 7 hours Long weekends, ideally leaving Thursday night or early Friday
Jaipur 7 to 8 hours Long weekends only

We have written city-wise guides for the nearby ones: Best Resort Near Udaipur, Best Resort Near Jodhpur, Best Resort Near Mount Abu and Best Resort Near Ahmedabad. Coming from further away? Our Jaipur to Jawai guide covers the road, train and cab options, and how to reach Jawai from Udaipur, Jodhpur and Ahmedabad has the route details.

A simple rule: if the drive is more than five hours one way, do not try it on a regular two-day weekend. Wait for a long weekend, or leave on Friday afternoon and give yourself a proper evening to arrive.

A Simple Two-Night Jawai Weekend Getaway Plan

This plan assumes you reach on Friday and leave on Sunday. It is deliberately loose. The point of a weekend in Jawai is not to see ten things.

Friday: Arrive and Do Nothing

Check-in at Agvani Resort starts at 1:00 PM. If you are coming from Udaipur or Jodhpur, you can leave after breakfast and reach by lunch or early afternoon. If you are coming from further away, even a late-evening arrival is fine.

Once you are in, resist the urge to plan. Walk around the property, sit outside with a cup of tea, and let the road tiredness leave your shoulders. Dinner is Rajasthani, and it is heavier than you expect. Go to bed early. You will be waking up in the dark.

Before you sleep, ask the team for your pick-up time. Nobody wants to guess at 5 AM.

Saturday: Safari, Long Breakfast, Slow Afternoon

The morning safari runs from 5:30 AM to 8:30 AM. It will be cold. Wear layers you can remove once the sun comes up, and keep your voice low. Quiet groups tend to get better sightings than loud ones.

Come back to a hot breakfast and then do very little. Sleep, read, or walk around. The middle of the day is the best part of a short trip, because you are not rushing anywhere.

In the evening you can take the second safari (5:00 PM to 8:00 PM) or save your energy for the bonfire and dinner. On holiday weekends the bonfire is where most guests end up.

Sunday: Village, Dam or a Late Start

On the last day, pick one thing, not three. Some people visit a Rabari village to see how the community lives alongside the leopards. Others prefer a visit to the Jawai Dam, which attracts birds in winter. If you only have a regular weekend, a late breakfast and an unhurried check-out is a perfectly good option too.

Check-out is at 10:00 AM, though late check-out is sometimes possible depending on availability, so ask when you book. If you are driving to Udaipur or Jodhpur, leave by early afternoon so you reach before dark. Winter roads are easier in daylight.

Only have one night? It works if you arrive on Saturday morning and do the evening and morning safaris back to back, but two nights is far better. For a longer stay, see our Jawai 2 days / 3 days itinerary.

Safari Timings and Rates

The morning safari runs from 5:30 AM to 8:30 AM and the evening safari from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Each costs ₹4,500 for an open gypsy that seats up to six people, so the whole vehicle is yours. Tea and coffee are included, and pick-up and drop from the resort are available. A longer full-day safari, from 11:30 AM to 6:30 PM, costs ₹18,000 for four seats.

Arrive 10 to 20 minutes early. Some mornings the leopard shows up in ten minutes, some days it takes an hour of scanning the rocks. We have been honest about the odds in Is a Leopard Sighting Guaranteed in Jawai?, which is worth reading before you go.

Current rates are on our Jawai safari booking page. Timings and prices can change with the season, so confirm on WhatsApp when you book.

Rooms and a Rough Weekend Budget

Room Type Price (MAP) Best For
Luxury Tent ₹5,000 Couples and solo travellers
Cottage ₹6,000 Small families
Cottage with Plunge Pool ₹7,000 Families or groups who want a slow stay

You can see everything on the Jawai hotels tariff page.

Here is a rough idea of what a weekend can cost for two adults in a Luxury Tent. Two nights come to about ₹10,000. Add two safaris at ₹4,500 each and you are at around ₹19,000, before taxes and your travel. If you go as a group of six and share one gypsy, a single safari works out to ₹750 a head, which makes a safari one of the cheaper parts of the trip.

These are indicative numbers. Rates can differ on peak dates like Christmas and New Year’s Eve, so please confirm before you plan your budget.

What the Weather Feels Like

Days are comfortable, and often lovely in the sun. Nights and early mornings are the cold part. In an open vehicle at 6 AM the wind makes it feel colder than the number on your phone. Average night temperatures are around 10°C, and can drop lower on clear nights, particularly in January.

Pack thermals, a windproof jacket, a woollen cap, gloves, comfortable shoes with grip, and earthy colours for the safari. Add sunscreen, because the winter sun is still strong. We have a longer packing list in our Christmas and New Year guide, so you do not need to repeat it here.

Beyond the Safari

Most guests are surprised by how much they enjoy the in-between time.

  • Jawai Dam: Calm water, rocks and, in winter, birds. Bring binoculars if you own a pair.
  • Rabari village visit: A look at how the community lives alongside the leopards.
  • Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh: Both are about two hours away by road. They suit a longer stay, or a stop on the way to Udaipur. Check opening timings first.

When to Book Each Weekend

If you are reading this in October or November, you still have time. But not unlimited time.

  • Christmas and New Year dates: Book at least three to four weeks ahead. Plunge-pool cottages go first.
  • Regular December weekends: Two to three weeks ahead is usually comfortable, though Saturday safari slots can fill sooner.
  • January long weekends: Republic Day and Sankranti dates tend to be booked by people who plan early, so do not wait for the week before.

Always confirm your safari slot when you book the room, not after you arrive. Evening slots fill up fastest.

Mistakes People Make on a Jawai Weekend Getaway

Booking only a room. The safari is why most people come. If you wait until you arrive, the slot you want may be gone.

Planning too much. Two safaris, a village visit, the dam and Ranakpur in two days will leave you exhausted. Pick two things and enjoy them.

Underpacking for the cold. People check the afternoon temperature and forget about 6 AM. Keep a warm layer within reach.

Expecting a guarantee. Leopards are wild. Patience and a quiet group improve your odds, but nobody can promise a sighting.

FAQs

Which is the best weekend in December to visit Jawai?

It depends on what you want. Regular weekends in early and mid December are calm and easier to book. The Christmas weekend and the New Year weekend are livelier and fill up faster.

Can I do a Jawai weekend trip without taking leave?

Yes, if you can leave on Friday evening or early Saturday. A regular Saturday and Sunday gives you one full day and two safari slots if you arrive in time. For a more relaxed trip, use the Christmas weekend or a long weekend that needs only one day of leave.

How many nights are enough for a Jawai weekend?

Two nights is the sweet spot. It gives you at least one safari, a slow afternoon and a morning when you do not have to rush. One night works only if you arrive early and do not mind a tight schedule.

How cold does it get in Jawai in December and January?

Days are usually pleasant, but nights and early mornings are cold, especially in an open safari vehicle. January is often the coldest month, so pack thermals, a windproof jacket, a cap and gloves.

How much does a leopard safari cost at Agvani Resort?

A morning or evening safari costs ₹4,500 for an open gypsy that seats up to six people. The full-day safari costs ₹18,000 for four seats. Please confirm current rates and timings on WhatsApp when booking.

Is a leopard sighting guaranteed?

No. Jawai gives you better odds than most places in India, but leopards are wild animals and nobody can promise a sighting on a particular day. Going for more than one safari increases your chances.

Is Agvani Resort suitable for families and pets?

Families with children are welcome, and pets are allowed too. Keep children warmly dressed for the morning safari and keep pets well-behaved so other guests stay comfortable.

What are the check-in and check-out timings?

Check-in is at 1:00 PM and check-out is at 10:00 AM. Late check-in and late check-out may be possible on request, depending on availability.
