A Jawai leopard safari road trip fits easily between Udaipur and Jodhpur, because Jawai is about 3 hours from both. You don’t need to go out of your way to fit it in.
Most of us plan Rajasthan around forts, palaces and busy markets. But by day five, every fort starts looking like the last one. Now picture this: you spend a night or two in the granite hills, and a leopard is just lying on a rock at sunrise. The whole trip feels different after that.
A Jawai leopard safari road trip works well for three reasons. The drive is short, the place is peaceful, and you can plan safaris around your travel days. The only thing to watch is timing. If you get it wrong, you’ll end up rushing the safari or missing it.
This guide covers the routes that work, a day-by-day plan, how many nights to stay, and how to time your drive.

Why a Jawai Leopard Safari Road Trip Works So Well in Rajasthan
Jawai is in Pali district, sitting between two of the biggest cities in Rajasthan. So it’s an easy stop, and it brings some wildlife into a trip that’s otherwise all about history.
Where Jawai Sits on the Rajasthan Map
These are road distances to Jawai.
| From | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Ranakpur | 50 km | 1 hour |
| Mount Abu | 80 km | 1 hour 30 minutes |
| Kumbhalgarh | 97 km | 2 hours |
| Udaipur | 140 km | 3 hours |
| Jodhpur | 160 km | 3 hours |
| Ahmedabad | 300 km | 5 hours |
| Jaipur | 380 km | 6 hours |
| Delhi | 650 km | 10 hours |
Both Udaipur and Jodhpur are around three hours away, which makes Jawai a perfect halfway stop. Ranakpur is only an hour from Jawai, so you can drop in at the temple on your way.
A Wild Break Between Forts and Palaces
Most Rajasthan trips are packed with history. Fort, palace, market, and then the same thing in the next city. Jawai slows everything down.
- The leopards walk around open granite hills, so spotting them is much easier than in a thick forest
- You won’t find the crowds you see at big city sights
- Rabari village life and Jawai Dam give you something new to look at
- The pool and the bonfire evenings are great for tired legs
Two nights here take the tiredness out of the road before your next city.
3 Rajasthan Road Trip Routes That Include a Jawai Leopard Safari
Every trip is a different length, so here are three routes. They go from a short side trip from Gujarat to a long loop through Jaipur and Udaipur.
| Route | Drive legs | Trip length | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Udaipur, Jawai, Jodhpur | Udaipur to Jawai 140 km (3 h), Jawai to Jodhpur 160 km (3 h) | 5 to 6 days | First-timers, couples, families |
| Jaipur, Jawai, Udaipur | Jaipur to Jawai 380 km (6 h), Jawai to Udaipur 140 km (3 h) | 7 to 9 days | Long loops, photographers |
| Ahmedabad, Mount Abu, Jawai | Ahmedabad to Jawai 300 km (5 h), Mount Abu to Jawai 80 km (1 h 30 min) | 3 to 4 days | Gujarat travellers, long weekends |
Route 1: Udaipur to Jawai to Jodhpur
This one is the classic, and there’s a good reason for that. Both drives are about three hours, so no day feels heavy.
You can also add Ranakpur on the Udaipur side. Then you get lakes, temples, wildlife, and the blue city of Jodhpur, all in one trip.
Route 2: Jaipur to Jawai to Udaipur
The drive from Jaipur to Jawai is the longest one here, around six hours. So don’t try to squeeze in sightseeing on the same day.
Leave Jaipur early in the morning. Stop somewhere for lunch, and you’ll get to Jawai by afternoon. From there, Udaipur is only a slow, easy 3-hour drive.
Route 3: Ahmedabad to Mount Abu to Jawai
Coming from Gujarat? Ahmedabad is about five hours from Jawai, and Mount Abu is only 1 hour 30 minutes away.
Spend a night in the hills first, then two nights at Jawai. That works really well, and it’s perfect for a long weekend too.

Jawai Leopard Safari Itinerary for a 6-Day Rajasthan Road Trip
This plan is for the classic Udaipur to Jodhpur route. I’ve kept the long drives away from the safari mornings, so nobody starts a safari already tired.
Days 1 and 2: Udaipur
Spend these two days in Udaipur. Between the lake views, the palace, and the old city lanes, you’ll have enough to do.
Take it easy, though. Day 4 starts at 5:30 AM, so save some energy for it.
Day 3: Drive via Ranakpur and Evening Safari
- Leave Udaipur by 9 AM
- Late morning: stop at the Ranakpur Jain Temple, which is famous for its 1,444 carved pillars
- Have lunch on the road and carry on to Jawai (Ranakpur is about an hour away)
- Around 3 PM: check in and freshen up
- 4:45 PM: reach the pickup point
- 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM: evening leopard safari in an open gypsy
- Night: dinner and a bonfire
Kumbhalgarh Fort is another good stop on this stretch. But it’s about two hours from Jawai, so choose either Ranakpur or Kumbhalgarh for this day. Doing both is too much.
Day 4: Morning Safari, Dam and a Slow Afternoon
- 5:30 AM to 8:30 AM: morning safari, with tea or coffee in the gypsy
- Breakfast, then a short rest
- 10:00 AM: village safari or a visit to Jawai Dam
- Afternoon: lunch, pool time and a nap
- Evening: go on one more safari, or just sit on the hills with some hi-tea
Don’t plan anything big today. Stay at the resort, relax, and enjoy the hills.
Day 5: Jawai to Jodhpur
- Check out by 10 AM. If you’d like more time, ask for a late check-out. They’ll say yes only if the room isn’t booked
- Leave for Jodhpur after check-out. It’s roughly 160 km, so expect about 3 hours on the road
- Evening: reach, put your bags down, and take a slow walk through the old city
Day 6: Mehrangarh Fort and the Markets
Spend the day at Mehrangarh Fort and in the old city markets.
Want these two nights at Jawai? Book your room and safari together or call +91 7426936663, and the resort will set the safari timings to match your drive.
How Many Nights in Jawai? Why a Day Trip Falls Short
Some road trip tours give Jawai only a few hours. You can do that, but the safari gets the worst deal in the whole day. Here’s how each option looks.
What a Same-Day Safari Gives You
On a day trip from Udaipur or Jodhpur, you get a temple, a fort, and a safari all in one go. It sounds fine when you read it. But when you’re in it, the day just feels rushed.
- You get one safari, and it’s usually in the evening
- It ends around 8 PM, and then you have a three-hour drive back in the dark
- Village roads at night often have cows and goats just walking around
- If the leopard doesn’t show up on that one drive, you don’t get another chance
Why Two Nights Works Best
Leopards don’t follow a schedule. A good Jawai leopard safari itinerary always keeps one evening slot and one morning slot. If you add a second morning or evening, your chances get even better.
| Plan | Safaris | Stress level | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day trip | 1 | High, long drive both ways | Very tight schedules |
| 1 night | 2 | Medium | Short breaks |
| 2 nights | 3 to 4 | Low | Most road trips |

Jawai Safari Travel Guide for Drivers: Timings, Roads and Safari Slots
A driving day and a safari day don’t go well together. Most people learn this the hard way on road trips. Keep them apart, and both feel easy.
Plan Arrival Around the 1 PM Check-in and 5 PM Safari
The evening safari starts at 5 PM sharp. Be at the pickup point 10 to 20 minutes before that. Check-in opens at 1 PM.
- Reach the resort anywhere between 1 PM and 3 PM
- Don’t plan a long lunch, or you’ll arrive late
- Running late? Call the resort early. They can shift your slot
Before you set out, read how to reach Jawai from Udaipur, Jodhpur and Ahmedabad. It gives you the exact route, turn by turn.
Surviving the 5:30 AM Safari After a Long Drive
The morning safari is the best one, but the start time is brutal. Add a long drive from the day before, and it gets harder.
- Eat dinner early and go to bed on time
- Set two alarms, just to be safe
- Lay out your warm clothes the night before, since winter mornings are freezing
- Take the evening safari the day you arrive. Save the morning one for day two, when you’ve slept
Self-Drive or Car with Driver?
Either works. It just depends on how much driving you want to do.
- Self-drive: you get freedom, but the village roads need patience
- Car with driver: much easier on long days, and the driver already knows the roads
- Start early to miss the afternoon heat and village traffic
- Watch out for cows and goats on small roads
- Download offline maps, because the network can drop
- Fill up on fuel before the village stretches
Parking and Pick-Up
Parking at the resort is free and safe. Safaris start from the Jawai and Bera side, and they offer pick-up and drop-off. So your car can just rest while the gypsy does all the work.
What to Carry on Safari
Carry a warm jacket for early mornings, a scarf or cap against dust, water, comfortable shoes and a camera with a zoom lens. Avoid bright clothes and loud perfume, since they put wildlife off. Follow your guide’s instructions at all times, and stay seated in the gypsy.
Best Time for a Rajasthan Road Trip with a Jawai Safari
October to March is the safest pick, but the other months are nice in their own way. Your choice depends on the weather you like, how much crowd you can take, and how hot your car gets inside.
| Months | Season | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| October to March | Best season | Pleasant weather, great for safaris and sightseeing |
| April to June | Summer | Hot days, leopards stay near water sources |
| July to September | Monsoon | Green hills, quiet and calm |
December to February gets crowded. Everyone wants the same rooms and the same safari slots, so book a couple of weeks early if you’re travelling then. Last minute usually doesn’t work in these months.
Think about the car too. Winter driving is easy, and no one is sweating in the back seat. But evenings and early mornings get properly cold. Keep a jacket in the car, not in the boot. Want to know what each month looks like? Best Time to See Leopards in Jawai: Month-by-Month Guide has all of it.

Your Chances of Seeing a Leopard in Jawai
Leopards don’t follow a schedule, so no guide can promise a sighting. The best way to improve your odds is to book more than one safari. Keep one evening and one morning slot, and add a second if you can. The leopards live on open granite hills, which makes them much easier to spot than in a thick forest.
How to Reach Jawai
The nearest major railway station is Falna. The nearest airports are Udaipur (140 km, about 3 hours by road) and Jodhpur (160 km, about 3 hours by road). For turn-by-turn directions, read how to reach Jawai from Udaipur, Jodhpur and Ahmedabad.

FAQs
What are the chances of seeing a leopard in Jawai?
No one can promise a sighting, because leopards don’t keep a schedule. Booking one evening and one morning safari gives you the best odds.
Can I do a Jawai leopard safari as a day trip from Udaipur or Jodhpur?
People do it, but it’s tiring. You sit in the car for around six hours for one evening safari, and the drive back is in the dark. Staying one night is far easier.
How far is Jawai from Udaipur, Jodhpur and Jaipur?
From Udaipur it’s 140 km, a 3-hour drive. Jodhpur is 160 km away, so that’s about 3 hours too. Jaipur is way farther at 380 km. Plan on 6 hours behind the wheel.
How many days do I need for a Rajasthan road trip with Jawai in it?
A trip with Udaipur, Jawai, and Jodhpur fits nicely in 5 to 6 days. Want Jaipur as well? Then you need 7 to 9 days. Coming from Gujarat through Mount Abu? 3 to 4 days is enough.
Should I put Jawai at the start or the end of my road trip?
The middle is best. You see a few cities, then get a quiet break in the hills before the next one. Ending at Jawai is okay too, mainly if you fly out of Udaipur or Jodhpur. Just leave a few spare hours after the 10 AM check-out, so you’re not rushing.
Can I drive to Jawai by myself? Is it safe?
Yes, you can. The highways are in good shape. The village roads need more care, since cows and goats often walk on them. The network can drop, and petrol pumps are far apart. So go in daylight, save your maps offline, and fill up early. A driver makes it easier if you don’t want the tension.
Can I leave my car at the resort while I go on safari?
Yes. Parking is free and safe at the resort. The gypsy picks you up and drops you back, so your car just stays there till you check out.
Can I visit Ranakpur or Kumbhalgarh on the same day as the safari?
Ranakpur is easy since it’s only an hour away. Stop there on your way in. Kumbhalgarh is two hours away, which makes the day too packed. Do it on another day.
